About this deal

A live favourite among Suede devotees since its release, it’s a perfect mix of the sleaze of Suede and the tragic degradation of Dog Man Star: a nuclear-powered glam-storm with a dirty-as-they-come riff and belting chorus, sticky with hints of blood, violence and nastiness.

A DVD included with this set repeats the Tour Films and Stay Together promo video but omits all the live performances. The recurring theme of self-loathing is reflected in the ballad "The Wild Ones", which tells of a dying relationship. David Byrne of the Irish Independent noted the similarity in the song's outro to Bowie's " Starman". The magazine’s contributor Jon Monks said, "Suede will never make a record this good again, whether it is because Butler left or merely it was a such a perfect time for Brett to be writing, they have failed to make anything nearly so encompassing as this. The Drowners” earned the band a great deal of attention from the music press as a potential foundation stone in the Britpop movement. If Dog Man Star was intended to be the anti-Britpop album, then Coming Up was the anti-Dog Man Star. We seem to be in the teeth of a Suede revival: their reunion has been greeted with widespread delight, and last week the NME referred to them as "the hip reference everyone's trying to drop". Black or Blue" is a song about racial intolerance and tells the story of a doomed interracial romance. Best of all, though, is My Dark Star, originally the B-side of Stay Together but a glistening gem in its own right.

Songs like The Wild Ones which I thought were over the top to the point where I didn't care for it in the slightest suddenly became brilliant. He went back the next day to pick up his guitar, and was told through the intercom that his guitar would be left in the street for him (Buller disputes this, stating that the guitars were left at the studio reception desk for collection). In September 2003, Suede played five nights at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts, dedicating each night to one of their five albums and playing through an entire album a night.Butler delivers a searing solo, after the chorus, as the song ends with Anderson’s cry of ‘We’ll watch them burn’, followed by a fading coda of children’s voices echoing his words. Then, in Atlanta, Suede suffered the ignominy of having to open for the Cranberries, [10] who had become a bigger draw, thanks to their recent hit " Linger".

Well, Dog Man Star is the only album I can think of where this phenomenon happens twice for me - once when Brett Anderson's voice kicks in at the beginning of "The Wild Ones" and, again, when the strings build to a climax near the end of "Still Life". Dog Man Star might have been even better with this on the tracklist, but don’t fret for Killing of a Flashboy: something so thrillingly brutal can fend for itself. The demo of 'Saturday Night', though, is a vastly superior version to the rather schmaltzy track that ended up on the actual album. This, their debut album, confirmed that they’d earned such attention, becoming one of the fastest-selling debut albums in British history. Dog Man Star is a real testament to what you can create when you want to push yourself as far as you can go.

Too smart and sexy for grunge’s slacker misanthropy; too tacky and trashy to fit in with London indie darlings Blur; a band who stood out like a smacked arse among their po-faced peers. Butler drew inspiration from The Smiths' The Queen is Dead, Joy Division's Closer, Marc and the Mambas' Torment and Toreros and The Righteous Brothers' " You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling". Daddy’s Speeding’ is equally unsettling, with minimal guitar arrangements and a somber piano rhythm. Anderson’s voice, turned raspy by endless chain-smoking and resembling a slightly fey Dot Cotton, sounded particularly lacklustre.
