About this deal

These (glaring) omissions make possible the inclusion of what is probably an excessive number of hip Europeans and North Americans who are products of the cultural studies movement but, though I love them, aren't nearly as important long-term as, say, Émile Zola, Oswald de Andrade or Octavio Paz. It's useful for someone, like me, who does not have time to read all of those philosophers and poets in-depth while taking two other classes and raising a child. That's not a major issue, however, in an otherwise spectacular anthology of a vital subject area for any student of literature. Anyway, if you're looking for a book of philosophy that contains an adequate mix of canonical musts (Plato, Freud, etc. This book has LOADS of critical and theoretical texts and is going to be invaluable as I move into my third and final year.

A scholar of American literature and American literary criticism, Professor Cain is the author of The Crisis in Criticism: Theory, Literature, and Reform in English Studies (Johns Hopkins UP), F. The first edition was published in 2001, with a second edition published in 2010 and a third in 2018. I find it especially helpful that they have alternative table of contents listing content according to schools and movements, genres and subjects. This book has most things covered (I haven't sat and read through it yet, but skimming through I have found 90% of lecture references) and means no more cowering behind a mountain of books. Her first foray into mystery, Miss Baker Regrets, was published as Book II in Bricktop's Paris: African American Women in Paris Between the Two World Wars in February 2015. I purchased this for my undergraduate degree in English and we have been directed to it a lot from our course leaders and it is useful for accesible background reading and secondary reading for essays and such as it contains a very wide range of critical analyses/essays etc. However, a good selection from each is included, as is a quick preface for each individual containing a holistic overview of their biographical information and theoretical contributions to their respective fields.

Not that useful for the section on Freud either - his work can be found in easier to read formats and many times free.Unfortunately because there is so much information the hard cover version is printed in tiny, tiny type on wafer-thin paper.

He is the author of Theory and the Novel: Narrative Reflexivity in the English Tradition (Cambridge UP) and the editor of PC Wars: Politics and Theory in the Academy (Routledge), The Institution of Literature (SUNY Press), and Critics at Work: Interviews (NYU Press). Even though it's one of the most humongous books I've ever owned, this Norton Anthology holds a special place in my heart. Having studied him in A-level psychology I really liked being able to read the actual essays on dreams. The Norton isn't inventing this trend, which has been around for awhile; but it isn't resisting it either. This is a monstrous anthology; it was used as the primary textbook for my Critical Theory and Literary Criticism course (ENGL 602 at University of Maryland). Sin embargo, el libro estaba manchado por el lado (en la foto se ve mejor de lo que es) y las esquinas como si se hubieran golpeado.

While it could be argued that this would make for an even thicker and longer text, it is something that this volume certainly lacks. Distinguished Professor of the Humanities and Director of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. It is also a really helpful guide for those who study American literature and culture; it is written in a very organized way that will make it easy, even for freshmen, to understand the literary movements and the smooth transcedence from one movement to the next. The Norton Anthology provides a very good biography of each author, which then gives you sufficient background knowledge to be able to understand the primary texts. This anthology does a good job of providing salient works by a wide variety of authors on the various theories of literary criticism. I grabbed this highly regarded anthology hoping to discover or brush up on rewarding ways of thinking about literature.
